More than twenty years ago, Massachusetts lawmakers passed legislation offering consumers a wider choice of electricity options by creating the retail electric market and eliminating the monopoly held by the big utilities.
Now, Massachusetts is considering eliminating the retail electric market and putting the power back in the hands of the utility companies. This would be devastating to Massachusetts residents. Here’s why:
AFFORDABILITY
True electric choice means more affordable options for consumers. Last winter when customers of big utilities – including National Grid, Eversource and Unitil – saw big rate spikes, all residential competitive supplier rate plans were cheaper than basic service rates. The truth is if consumers had switched to residential electric rates prior to last winter, they would have saved about $1 billion. With costs from housing to health care to groceries skyrocketing on families, Massachusetts residents should not have their ability to choose cheaper electricity stripped away.
INNOVATION AND RENEWABLE OPTIONS
To combat the climate crisis, we need more renewable energy options for residents, not less. Eliminating electricity choice would eliminate many renewable options for customers. For instance, retail electric suppliers offer 100% renewable energy plans. No utility offers that. Competitive suppliers also innovate with technology in ways big utilities don’t, on things like energy storage, smart thermostats, and solar energy – things that are essential to meeting our climate goals.
PRESERVE COMPETITION
Competition means more choices for consumers. Removing choice in the electric market means that consumers – and Massachusetts – are beholden to the big utilities. It means consumers will lose the ability to shop around for the lowest prices and other innovative options to meet their needs. The big utilities would be the only choice, giving them even greater, monopolistic control. That’s not good for consumers or Massachusetts.
We should be protecting and improving consumer choice, not ending it. We should be giving the big utilities more competition, not a monopoly.
